Mia’s Flamingo and Pineapple Birthday Party

My baby turned TWO!!! A year ago, but whatever. I wrote this post also about a year ago but had so much trouble choosing photos it took me until now to publish. IN-SANE. (Mia’s third birthday is in two weeks. No joke.)

Party like a flamingoSo, my little darling is a little weirdo and sometimes she just stands on one foot and I thought that’s so perfect for the flamingo trend (which yes, some of us are tired of at this point but trend aside, I thought it was perfect). Also, she’s such a flamingo. I mean this is the girl that has accessorized from the minute she was able to lift accessories. This is the girl that wears tutus and sparkles as often as possible and tried to steal an old lady’s lipstick from her purse. This is the girl who somehow managed to find, take, and appropriate my grandmother’s rings that were on my dresser. At least she’s got good taste.

My favorite part of the decor was this focal point. We put flamingo books and art on the shelf with some flowers, I taped a bunch of fans to the wall covering the tv, and setup the dessert table with confetti and cupcakes.

We got flamingo balloons from Confetti and Sparkle Party Shop and the banner was made by me. Party like a flamingo Party like a flamingo We found blue velvet Room and Board chairs on Craigslist pretty recently and I knew I had to cover them so I could relax and enjoy the party so we used some Turkish throws in pretty colors. And the birthday girl found some popcorn.Party like a flamingo Party like a flamingo Party like a flamingo Party like a flamingo Party like a flamingoThe lighting around the table was totally not ideal, but I loved it in real life.

Plus the gold glitter happy birthday banner, obvi.Party like a flamingoParty like a flamingo Photo Booth Party like a flamingo Photo Booth I know that last photo is so grainy, but I love it. And then Mia had her cake. Like we were in middle of singing happy birthday and Mia just leaned over and tok a big bite of her cake. I love this girl.

In many ways Mia hasn’t changed much but I guess that’s for her third birthday party post. You know, in two weeks.

Happy birthday my little flamingo!

Great Gatsby Inspired “Roaring Twenties” 30th Birthday Party

When Jodi reached out to me with this Great Gatsby inspired “Roaring Twenties” party she threw, I was pretty upset. I mean there is absolutely no logical reason that I wasn’t invited. Sure we’ve never met and don’t live near each other, but are those good reasons? You be the judge.
Roaring Twenties / Great Gatsby Party
“My name is Jodi, I am 30 years old and living in Boston with my fiance Jim. I started my blog Twine & Vines this past summer as a way to chronicle DIY projects, thrift shopping adventures, room makeovers, design inspiration from everywhere and of course… parties! Around that same time I also began selling in my Etsy shop.  Another recent tidbit is I got engaged this past summer! So when I’m not crafting or blogging I am busy planning our wedding that will take place in September!”
Jodi of Twine and Vines “I had planned/obsessed over having a Great Gatsby/ Roaring 20’s 30th party for a couple of years (before the movie came out and before it became an insanely popular idea.)”
“I threw my birthday party at my mother and father’s house in Connecticut, around the pool area. My family helped out in many ways! My sister Holly made the flapper headbands for us and our guests to wear, a huge hit! She makes and sells jewelry on Etsy so she knew what she was doing, and was great at making the designs. (You can find a blog post on it here.)”
Great Gatsby Inspired "Roaring Twenties" 30th Birthday Party“My mother was amazing because she had my grandmother send old family pictures from the 20’s and 30’s to use as decoration throughout the party.  I popped these vintage photographs in frames and placed them in the photo prop area to use as inspiration and also placed a few in various areas throughout the party.  These pictures were a great birthday surprise by my mother and have proved to be some of my all time favorite photographs.”
Great Gatsby Inspired "Roaring Twenties" 30th Birthday Party- vintage photos and accessories.jpg“My parents also provided the food (inspired by food from the book) that we enjoyed at the party like fried chicken, shrimp cocktail and a bar that included 20’s inspired signature drinks made by my brother-in-law Craig like “Bathtub Gin” Lime Rickys, Mint Juleps and Old Fashions.  I used gold rimmed vintage glasses that I picked up very inexpensively from our trip to The Longest Yard Sale for the mixed drinks, and paper wrapped mason jars for the beers (you can find a tutorial here) and lastly I used DIY gold and silver glitter thrift shopped glasses for the champagne, (tutorial here.)”

Great Gatsby Inspired "Roaring Twenties" 30th Birthday Party “I also printed out “Closed for National Prohibition Act” signs that I taped all over the photo booth backdrop (made from old doors hinged together.) I wanted to stage a scene that looked like a secret speakeasy. You can find the blog post on creating this look here and the photo prop area here.”

First of all, Jodi’s dress! Gorgeous! All those flapper accessories are amazing and I adore the photobooth she set up. The thrifted props, the DIYs Jodi put together and the fab details like food and drink inspired by the book make it that much better. Happy Thirtieth Jodi and congratulations on your engagement!!!

You can see more of Jodi’s talents on her blog and shop. Thank you so much for sharing (but seriously next time I’ll expect an invite!!!)

I always love reader submissions! If you have a party, room, DIY, or shop you want to share e-mail me at shoesoffpls [at] gmail [dot] com. You can read more about specifications here.

Max’s Dinosaur Party

I have wanted to start a featured party series on the blog for a while and am SO excited to start it off with Tamsyn! She is the talent behind Max & Me and those gorgeous gold “love” pillows you’ve probably seen everywhere. She is also a mom to two gorgeous little boys, expecting a third, and running a business and blog so maybe we should all take a minute and clap for her (APPLAUSE!)

For her son Max’s fourth birthday party, Tamsyn put together the cutest dinosaur party filled with DIY details and all the T-rex goodness a kid could want.

I love the whole setup at Max’s Nona’s house (his request, how cute?). The pom pom banner was made by Tamsyn.

The invites (from Three Little Monkeys Studio), a shot of the gorgeous birthday boy, and some dinosaur juice because what is a dinosaur party without it? Tamsyn created single-serving popcorn in cupcake wrappers and placed green and brown paper straws in milk jars.

All the dinosaur fossil details like that incredible cake, cookies, and the party bags that Tamsyn put together take the party to the next level.

I love that nothing is over the top or extreme and the decorations are limited to this table and it just looks incredible. It just goes to show that you can keep things simple and still fab. And I especially love that while this is a completely appropriate and fun birthday party for a four year old, it never veers into cutesy and if I knew any paleontologists I would throw them this party and it would be completely appropriate for them too (maybe I would spike the dinosaur juice though)

Thank you so much Tamsyn for starting off the party series!!! You guys will be seeing more of her talent here! (And you can read more about her and her shop here)

What’s your favorite detail? I can’t get over that cake, I mean are those real bones on a pile of dirt? I just don’t know!

If you have a party you’d like to submit, please e-mail me at shoesoffpls@gmail.com with high-res photos and a short description or link to your blog post.

Mia’s First Birthday DIY Projects

I did a lot of DIY projects for Mia’s first birthday, so here they all are in one place for easy reference. You know, just in case you enjoy watching New Girl as much as I do (which is when I make stuff) and/or want to save money on buying everything:

I did three other projects that I didn’t provide tutorials for: the crepe paper fringe layered garlands,  a felt birthday crown, and a confetti backdrop for the dessert table.

I made the fringe layered garland using the tutorial from A Subtle Revelry. For the confetti backdrop, I cut out circles and taped them to the wall. And as for the crown: it was pretty easy, but it was also one of my first sewing projects and I figured it out as I went along so I didn’t take pictures of the process.

Those are all the DIY projects I did for Mia’s first birthday party. It took time, but I love making them, I make them with love for Mia, and at the end of the day I save money but still get the look I want for her party.

I hope this was helpful! If you have any questions about details or sources, I’ll be happy to help, just leave a comment below and I’ll get back to you!

So th

Mia’s First Birthday Party {a recap}

Here are the pictures I know you’ve all been dying to see of Mia’s first birthday party ;) We didn’t really have a theme, I just stuck with the same colors and some shapes.

Mia's First Birthday PArty

I put paper lanterns, flower pom-poms (my tutorial here), and honeycombs on the sideboard next to one of my favorite things at the party: a giant gold foil “1” balloon from Confetti and Sparkle (Cindy is a doll!) I also strung one of the no-sew circle garlands from a previous party from the picture ledge.

I changed my mind pretty often about where I wanted to put the shape garlands, but in the end I chose the window next to the paper fans we’ve had up there since this party.First Birthday Party Decor, No-Sew Shape Garlands via Shoes Off Please

I ended up stringing the happy birthday cut-out letter banner with two pom-pom garlands framing it, across the opening to the kitchen nook. I love how it turned out in real life but it is incredibly hard to get a good photo of! We also set up the dessert table in the nook and as a little backdrop, I cut out circles with paper punches and taped them to the wall. Happy Birthday Garland via Shoes Off PleaseFirst Birthday Party Decor, Dessert Table via Shoes Off PleaseFirst Birthday Party, Dessert Table via Shoes Off PleaseI sewed(!) the fringe garlands going across the table front. It was a really simple sewing project, but really exciting for me as a self-taught newbie.First Birthday Party Decor, Fringe Garlands via Shoes Off PleaseIn the end, it was too hard for me to get the birthday sign I wanted as I wanted it since chalk is…well, chalk. So I Photoshopped a sign instead and used washi tape to put it on the actual chalkboard next to a mason jar with paper straws (also from Confetti and Sparkle) and some flowers.First Birthday Party Decor, Chalkboard Birthday Poster via Shoes Off PleaseI put the gold glitter cake toppers I made on the cake and sprinkled it with some gold sanding sugar. The cupcakes got the same treatment along with some confetti sprinkles and the delicious sprinkle cookies were made by my sister-in-law.First Birthday Party Decor, Gold Glitter Birthday Cake Topper via Shoes Off Please First Birthday Party Decor, Gold Glitter Birthday Cake Topper via Shoes Off Please First Birthday Party, Cupcakes via Shoes Off Please 3 First Birthday Party, Cookies via Shoes Off PleaseOn the shelves where we usually have mugs and glasses, I put some flowers (which were basically dead from the insane humidity in our over-heated apartment) and the favor boxes I put together for the kids.
First Birthday Party Decor via Shoes Off PleaseFirst Birthday Party Decor via Shoes Off PleaseAnd for the centerpieces (I will share the complete tutorial soon!) I updated boxes we had from Aiden’s mustache party and put in some cake pops…the ones that didn’t die when I tried to dip them into the candy melts.First Birthday Party Decor, Cake Pops Centerpieces via Shoes Off Please

The bottles with tulips were Izze bottles that I painted awhile ago (pre-blog). The rest of the food went on that table also (mini-waffles, fruit, syrup, and small sandwiches to keep it kid-friendly). And that’s it for the decor!

the birthday girl

The last DIY project I did was the felt birthday crown. If I had known about it earlier, I would have ordered from Little Blue Olive (crazy adorable Etsy shop) but there wasn’t enough time to order one so I attempted one of my own.

First Birthday OutfitThe birthday girl was a total star once she woke up and stopped being overwhelmed. She especially loves her cousins and it makes me so happy!

Yup, her tutu is tucked into her diaper in that last picture. I die for this girl.

Thank you everyone for the kind birthday wishes and thanks to our families for coming and making Mia’s first birthday party so special! Smooches!

Glitter Number Cups and Pom Pom Garland

With a little under three weeks to go for Mia’s party, I’m trying to space out the projects I post because there are a few I’m not going to make until the night before (just because people have this thing about fresh food. Weirdos.)

On Friday I did two really quick, really easy projects that anyone can do:

Number Cups and Pom Pom Garland via Shoes Off Please

The first thing I did was add tape to the paper cups to make glittery “1”s. I ordered these cups from papermash (similar ones here) and saw the DIY on their website. It looked easy enough, and it is. I cut out the same length of tape for all the cups, cut a “1” out of it, and added it to the cups.

The second was a pom-pom garland #garlandaddict Over the course of planning Mia’s first birthday party, I’ve changed my mind about the setup a billion times, which is obviously not an exaggeration at all. Anyway, my newest thought meant that I wanted to add another garland somewhere, but I didn’t feel like cutting more shapes and Aiden’s box of pom-poms were right there…

Pom Pom Garland via Shoes Off Please

I just took a needle and thread and went for it. Being a stellar blogger, I didn’t get shots of the process, but it was so easy and simple: measure the space for how long you want the thread to be and… push the needle through the pom poms. Yeah, not much I would’ve shown you there anyway.

I didn’t want to do a pattern so I just grabbed them as I went. And because there weren’t many pinks and purples left, I went for the spaced out look and I actually like it better.

Pom Pom Garland via Shoes Off Please

It proved to be impossible for me to get any shots of the garland that I liked because there’s almost NO natural light in this part of the house which meant overhead, artificial lighting making everything horribly yellow and there’s only so much Photoshopping one can do before things look crazy. I say it’s the DIY version of making someone look like they have flawless skin when they don’t.

Number Cups and Pom Pom Garland via Shoes Off Please

Only two more DIY Mondays till the party! Also Mia isn’t going to be a baby anymore. STOP FREAKING OUT! Fine, let’s freak out together. Sigh…
